| Transgender People Will Be Given Separate Cells in Punjab Jails. |
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ruled that transgender people be given separate cells in imprisonment, according to Pakistan Digital News.
Justice Baqir Najafi issued the directives while hearing a lawsuit involving the availability of amenities to detainees in the jail, particularly transgender people.
The complainant argued in his request that the lack of separate barracks causes 'humiliation' for transgender people.
Following an initial hearing, Justice Baqir Najfi issued an order requiring prisons to provide a separate cell for transgender people. While demanding the progress report on its directives, the court delayed the case meeting to January 20.
Previously, the federal government chose to incorporate transgender people into the Benazir Kafalat Programme (BKP) of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP).
BISP Chairman Shazia Marri announced the inclusion of transgender people as beneficiaries of the Benazir Kafalat Programme in a video message released on Saturday (BKP).
Shazia Marri applauded the implementation of the transgender policy as a "national monument success," noting that the transgender population is a member of the community and it is the government's job to help them.
